In this chapter Jesus tells two parables and gives an example of our final judgement – all of these continue the end times theme.
” ‘When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” ‘ ” (v31-34)
Jesus tells two parables (the ‘ten virgins’ and the ‘talents’) both of which remind us to be prepared for His return. We are to be wise, be ready, be patient, and continue actively building His kingdom. When that time ends (our life on earth is over or He comes back) we will be judged.
Though it sounds like the judgement described in this chapter is based on works, it is not. We know from various other verses we are saved by grace, not works (eg. Eph 2:8-9). So, the works described in verses 35-45 are merely outward expressions of people’s hearts, beliefs and attitudes – if we truly love God, our works will reflect that, and if we don’t love God, our works will also attest. The ‘sheep’ and ‘goats’ look different, just as Christ followers should look (behave) different from those of this world.
I encourage us to continue in a pattern of preparation and investment. The more time we spend with God, obeying His voice, reading His word, worshiping Him, and serving His people, the more ready we will be when our time is up. All God asks of us is our willingness to obey – He will look after all of the hard stuff (refining us, softening the hearts of others, helping us prioritize our time, etc).
All we need to do is submit our hearts to His will and leading (humble ourselves), each and every day. That ‘small start’ will gradually increase our fruitfulness, just like the parable of the talents. God always multiplies that which we joyfully give out of obedience to Him, freeing us to simply enjoy the relationship and trust He will look after the rest.
Father God, our Generous and Gracious Sovereign Lord, we praise Your holy and magnificent name. Thank you for giving us Your word, and Your guidance day by day. May we learn to submit ourselves to You daily, allowing Your Spirit within to increase our fruitfulness for Your kingdom. May all of our hearts, words and works honor and glorify You, forever and ever, amen.
