Psalm 110

Posted on 2019-09-132020-01-25 by Conqueror in Training

This Psalm appears to be David foretelling the second coming of Jesus, before He even came the first time.

“The Lord says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.’ The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours. The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.’ The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath. He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth. He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head.” (v1-7)

Jesus’ first appearance on this earth was a mission of peace and mercy. His second coming will not be the same – He will be coming to cleanse the earth of unrighteousness, of those who chose not to follow Him, and then He will claim His kingdom.

” ‘Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay everyone for what he has done.’ ” (Rev 22:12) “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.” (2 Pt 3:10) “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.” (Mt 24:36) “Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Mt 24:44)

What does this mean for us today? I suggest we should be living in a state of readiness for ourselves, and also helping others into a state of readiness. We could be living as if each day is the day before He comes – doing all that we can to prepare the way for His arrival. My challenge today (especially to myself) is to proclaim His name unashamedly, because tomorrow could be too late. Let’s embrace every opportunity to share our faith – not offensively forcing it upon people, but sharing it freely to those who are curiously seeking.

Father God, we anticipate the day of Your return. Please help us to live our lives in expectation of seeing Your face – though You may not be appearing physically (yet), we can still anticipate seeing You in every image-bearer and every circumstance. You are omnipresent so we ask for Your help in living as if that’s true. Please remind us that You are not just coming some day in the distant future, You are already here. Let’s live like Jesus is returning tomorrow, so that others may know You and join our rejoicing on that day of Your physical return. Amen.
