There are a few points of interest here, though I’ll focus on only one.
” ‘Say therefore to the people of Israel, “I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the Lord.” ‘ Moses spoke thus to the people of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses, because of their broken spirit and harsh slavery.”
This is a perfect picture, not only for the Israelites from 1550(ish) B.C., but for all people for all time: we, the human race, are under the burden of sin and slaves to the lord of this world (Satan). The Lord longs to be our God and deliver us out from under the burden of our slavery to sin. He will send one whom He calls, Jesus, to free us from that bondage by the power of His name.
“Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.” (Rom 6:16-18)
He longs to bring us into the promised land, the eternal City of New Jerusalem, where we will live for all eternity. He will be our God, and we will be His people.
“And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.” (Rev 21:2-3)
Lord Jesus, we praise You for who You are – the Way, the Truth, and the Life. You freed us from captivity under sin and Satan – we were slaves to sin, but through Your perfect sacrifice, we are now slaves to righteousness. As Your people, Your bride the church, may we continue to ally ourselves with You out of a desire to obey our Lord. We look forward to the day where we can have the marriage feast of the Lamb, and be welcomed into the New Jerusalem. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord, God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come. With all creation we sing praise to the King of Kings. You are our everything, and we will adore You.
