This chapter describes the continuing idolatry and rebellion of God’s fallen people, reminding them of what God has done for them despite their consistent sin. He then promises to restore those who will (re)turn to Him.
” ‘As I live, declares the Lord God, surely with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with wrath poured out I will be king over you. I will… gather you out of the countries where you are scattered… And I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there I will enter into judgment with you face to face. As I entered into judgment with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt… I will bring you into the bond of the covenant. I will purge out the rebels from among you, and those who transgress against me… Then you will know that I am the Lord.’ ” (v33-38 abr)
This may sound like an odd question, but what is one of the key ways that we know God is God? How do we authenticate Him and His word? How do we discern His voice from the countless others in this world? Well, frankly, “we” can’t.
God is self-authenticating. We know He’s God because He says He is, and He proves it. God’s word is trustworthy as His word because He fulfills it. His voice is discernable because His Spirit helps us know the difference. God authenticates Himself, keeps His word, and helps us hear Him because we’re not able to do this on our own.
God has given us the greatest gifts imaginable to help us – redemption from the ultimate penalty of sin through Jesus our King, and the Holy Spirit to help us in our moment-by-moment lives. He has given us His word – written, living, breathing, and imprinted on our hearts by His Spirit – so we can know it’s true and follow His guidance. Let’s accept God’s authentication of Himself, His Son, His Spirit, and His word.
Father God, Almighty Lord and Creator of the Universe, You alone have the authority and power to authenticate Yourself. May we learn to take You at Your word, and obey Your voice, as You help us discern Your will. To You be all honor, glory and praise, forever and ever, amen.
