This chapter contains promises / covenants from God to His people, and the line of David.
“The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: ‘Thus says the Lord: If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night will not come at their appointed time, then also my covenant with David my servant may be broken, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and my covenant with the Levitical priests my ministers. As the host of heaven cannot be numbered and the sands of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David my servant, and the Levitical priests who minister to me.’ ” (v19-22)
Can you break God’s covenant with the day and night, changing when and how the earth rotates, so the sun / moon cycle is different? I certainly can’t (and wouldn’t want to, even if I could). God is making the point that when He covenants something, no human can break God’s fulfillment of His word (we can only break our parts of our covenants with God).
This is a very good thing: we cannot break God’s word / promises / covenants / commitments. If we could break God’s promises, I’m sure we would be foolish enough to do so (honestly, I can be quite foolish sometimes, just ask my wife). Let’s praise God for His unbreakable promises / covenants to us.
Father God, our Magnificent and Glorious Lord, who is mighty in word and deed, we praise Your holy name. Thank you for Your unending and unbreakable covenants with us, Your people, who are made in Your image. Please help us to understand the importance of keeping our commitments, and do so, that we may honor You O Lord our God. May our behaviors around our words, actions, and promises, give glory to You and honor the name of Jesus our King. Amen.
