Jeremiah 30

This chapter describes the restoration of God’s people, those who remain faithful despite their sin and its consequences.

” ‘…Behold, I will restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob and have compassion on his dwellings; the city shall be rebuilt… and the palace shall stand where it used to be. Out of them shall come songs of thanksgiving, and the voices of those who celebrate… Their children shall be as they were of old, and their congregation shall be established before me, and I will punish all who oppress them… their ruler shall come out from their midst; I will make him draw near, and he shall approach me… And you shall be my people, and I will be your God.’ ” (v18-22 abr)

Two of the greatest (often intertwining) themes in scripture are God’s promise of relationship with His people, and His promise of restoration. God’s relationship with us was perfect until sin broke it. For thousands of years there has been a pattern of sin – restoration – sin – restoration. Jesus died on the cross and rose again to defeat sin, and restore us spiritually, which includes renewing our relationships with God.

Living in Canada, there has been a theme of restoration over the last several years. Both the church and the settlers egregiously sinned against the indigenous peoples of this land, destroying relationships. We need to start / continue on the path of reconciliation to create / restore trust, and build a better future. Unfortunately, we’re still a broken people prone to sin, so this will be a long road.

Thankfully, God is far greater than any broken relationship, and Jesus’ blood paid for every sin, especially those that breach relationships. Let’s embrace the themes of reconciliation and restoration, humble our hearts, confess our sin, and rely on the Holy Spirit’s guidance to rebuild relationships which we broke through our sin.

Father God, our Glorious Restorer and Magnificent Healer, we thank You for sending Jesus to create a way for reconciliation. Please help us to remain humble and penitent toward those with whom we have breached relationship, and please help us to seek restoration. May we put the love of Jesus at the forefront of every word and action, and strive to not only heal past hurts, but also strive to prevent future damage. We seek to do these things by acting like Jesus and relying on Your Spirit’s guidance. We praise Your holy name, forever and ever, amen.
