This chapter reads like a lament from God over the poor state of His people’s hearts.
“Thus says the Lord: ’Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.” (v23-24)
How easy is it to be prideful of ourselves, or our accomplishments? Can we be generous with our resources, or put our diplomas on a wall? The real question is, can we marvel in things like these while giving glory to God?
It’s not a bad thing to have resources or accomplishments. What we need to remember though is we cannot have / do these things without God’s support and provision.
Let’s boast in our Lord God Almighty, who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness on earth. He is far more worthy of praise than we are. When we receive praise from others, let’s redirect that back to God (at least in our hearts), so we don’t think more highly of ourselves than we should.
Father God, our Almighty Lord of steadfast love and righteousness, we praise Your holy and awesome name. We humbly acknowledge that without You, we would not even exist, let alone have the abilities / resources to accomplish anything. May we never forget we are Your children, borrowing Your strength, to fulfill Your will. May we honor You with any praise we receive, forever and ever, amen.
