This chapter is a three-way conversation between Isaiah, God, and His people – ‘God makes a statement, Isaiah adds commentary, the people pray’, type of cycle. There are a variety of prophetic, and real-time topics centering around repentance and salvation. I suggest reading the full chapter if you want to understand the bigger picture.
“O Lord, be gracious to us; we wait for you. Be our arm every morning, our salvation in the time of trouble… The Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness, and he will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge… ‘Now I will arise,’ says the Lord, ‘now I will lift myself up; now I will be exalted. Hear, you who are far off, what I have done; and you who are near, acknowledge my might.’ ” (v2, 5-6, 10, 13 abr)
A repeating theme throughout all of scripture is hints about who God is – His characteristics, values, abilities, works, etc. All that God says and does provides glimpses into the infinite depth of His character.
God knows that people (because of sin’s corruption) are distrusting and fearful. By giving us glimpses into His character and works, God is trying to show His trustworthiness. He can’t force us to trust Him, but He certainly gives us many reasons to trust Him.
I suggest we spend some daily time with God in prayer and scripture. If we’re having trust issues with Him (or anyone, for that matter), the best way to fix that is to invest time in our relationship, and get to know Him. If we already trust Him, that time invested will deepen trust and help equip us to help others build/rebuild trust in the Father.
Father God, our Glorious and Magnificent Lord, Your character and works are above reproach. Please draw us near to You, so we may develop deep and unwavering trust in You. May we partner with the Holy Spirit to help others build that same trust, and may the church rally for Your compassionate causes. May we honor, glorify and praise You with every word and action, just like Jesus our King. We love You Lord, amen.
