This chapter contains a self-description of ‘the Lord’s servant’.
“The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning… he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught… and I was not rebellious; I turned not backward. But the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced… and I know that I shall not be put to shame. He who vindicates me is near.” (v4-5, 7-8a abr)
What are the main characteristics of someone who serves God? According to this chapter, ‘the Lord’s servant’:
– uplifts their neighbors
– listens to and obeys God
– stands strong and firm in their beliefs (even when persecuted)
– does not fear people, only God
– spends regular time with God (“morning by morning”)
Jesus exhibited all of these characteristics (and more). By mimicking (following) Him, we will also develop these traits. I encourage us to continue praying for the fruit of the Spirit to be grown in our lives, so we may embody the characteristics of Christ each and every moment of each and every day.
This may seem ‘impossible’, however If Isaiah (a human) could embody these traits, then it’s also possible for us. Our main challenge is to remain patient, humble, and spend consistent time in relationship with God. If we can do that much, God will faithfully renew and transform us into Jesus’ image bearers.
Father God, our Glorious and Steadfast Lord, Your presence is with us each and every morning. You never leave our sides, even while we sleep, and we pray You would teach us to embrace that fact. May we consistently and constantly come to You in prayer and relationship, inclining our ears to hear Your voice, and may we humbly obey Your commands. May we seek to emulate Jesus in all we say and do, in partnership with Your guidance and teachings. May we love our neighbors faithfully, and serve You through every word and action. In the name of Jesus our Savior and King we praise You, amen.
