In this chapter God describes some of the major differences between Himself and false gods.
” ‘Listen to me, O house of Jacob… I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save. To whom will you liken me and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be alike? Those who… hire a goldsmith, and he makes it into a god… They lift it to their shoulders, they carry it, they set it in its place, and it stands there; it cannot move from its place. If one cries to it, it does not answer or save him from his trouble.’ ” (v3-7 abr)
God gives Israel a stark contrast between Himself and their false gods: God carries His people, yet people must carry their false gods.
From a spiritual perspective, false gods (things/people we value and prioritize over God), are ‘lifeless’ and ‘do not provide life’. They cannot save or carry us, or even ‘move on their own’.
God, the Father of Israel, the Lord and Creator of All, cannot be compared to anyone or anything, for there is none like Him. False gods (like people’s physical bodies) are fashioned from the dust, and they will return to the dust. False gods can be created/destroyed, but our True God cannot.
I suggest we prioritize God first in all that we say and do. Other important people/things in our lives will fall into place if we obey God. We don’t have to sacrifice everything we value to follow God, we just have to value God more than anything/anyone else. Let’s worship the God who carries us (our Eternal Savior who lifts us up), not the gods we have to carry (temporary worldly burdens that drag us down).
Father God, our One True Lord, our Creator God, You alone are worthy of our praise. Spirit please guide us so we may learn to praise our Father first, and submit everything else under His authority. Father, please help us to love our neighbor and ourselves by loving/obeying You first. Jesus, please teach us how to do this and submit everything unto the Father as You did. For Your honor, glory and praise, forever and ever, amen.
