This chapter reminds us that God is with His people, and we do not need to fear – He will be there in the thick of things, holding our hand, leading us in His ways.
“But you, Israel, my servant… you whom I took from the ends of the earth… I have chosen you and not cast you off… fear not, for I am with you… I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. You shall seek those who contend with you, but you shall not find them… For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, ‘Fear not, I am the one who helps you.’ ” (v8-10, 12-13 abr)
Thankfully, God’s words to us are repetitive, and consistent. There are many themes throughout scripture, and in our faith journeys today, which are repeated over and over again. One such theme is this: fear the Lord our God, and nothing / nobody else.
By fearing God, we are reverent, humbled, and obedient. We seek to serve Him, honor His commends, love Him, and love our neighbors. This fear is a good thing. Fearing our enemies, our own abilities, a loss of reputation, people’s opinions, etc. is not especially helpful to our spiritual walk with Jesus. These fears distract us from the work of our Lord.
I encourage us to perform regular ‘fear checks’. By keeping our eyes on our Savior, Protector, and Provider, worldly anxieties and fears will melt away. Do we still need to think about our physical wellbeing and the physical needs of those around us? Yes, within proper context. The subjects of earthly fear should not supersede or hijack our primary mission of building Jesus’ spiritual kingdom. The things which make the world anxious are not the entire picture, they merely play a role in a much larger picture God has in store for His people.
Father God, our Savior, Provider, Protector, Lord and Friend, You are steadfast and patient beyond measure. Thank You for holding our right hand and leading us in Your ways of righteousness. Thank you for giving us peace in our hearts and minds when we properly rely on You. Thank you for vanquishing our enemies, which includes our own misplaced fears. May we seek to honor, glorify, obey, praise, and adore You, with each and every breath, amen.
