This powerful, often-quoted chapter is essentially a song of comfort for God’s people, and praises to God. God is depicted as someone beyond comparison, because He is so powerful and so unique He can only be compared to Himself. Today I’m offering a prayer that’s a paraphrase of this ‘psalm’. I don’t know about you, but I need some encouragement today, and this chapter seems to fit that need.
Father God, our Lord and our Comforter, please speak tenderly to us and remind us that You have pardoned all of our sin. May we continue to do Jesus’ work, preparing Your kingdom here on Earth, revealing Your glory, so all will eagerly await Jesus’ return. Your Word O God stands steadfast forever, yet we are so brief in our days – may we fully rely on Your transcendent Word. From the highest mountains we declare the good news that Jesus is returning in might and glory, to reclaim His people and rule His kingdom. Who among us can measure the heavens with our fingers, or weigh the mountains on a scale? Who of us has taught You Father, or showed You something You did not already know? We are nothing compared to You, nothing but finite, weak creations, mere reflections of Jesus’ glory. The strongest nation in the world cannot compare to You O God. No one can measure You in relation to themselves, for we are unable to do anything apart from what You allow us to. You laid the foundations of all that is, You cause life to flourish and grow, You alone are the source of all that is good and right. The entire universe declares Your awesome power, greatness and wisdom. Who among us can replicate any of Your mighty works? Can we create ourselves out of nothing? What can we do or say that would escape Your sight or ear? Nothing of us is hidden from You O Mighty Father, yet You are unsearchable to us, and we only understand that which You help us understand. When we serve You O Lord, please give power to the faint among us, rest to the weary, and strength to the weak. When we stumble, please pick us up, and carry us when we’re unable to walk or even crawl. You alone are our Lord, so we seek to honor, glorify and praise You. Jesus, we seek wo follow You all of our days, as long as we have breath in our lungs. Amen.
