This chapter contains prophesy specifically about the end of days. It speaks of great disasters on sociological and ecological scales. Essentially the worst disasters imaginable will happen to this world shortly before Jesus returns – all part of God’s judgement on sin.
“Seek and read from the book of the Lord: Not one of these shall be missing; none shall be without her mate. For the mouth of the Lord has commanded, and his Spirit has gathered them. He has cast the lot for them; his hand has portioned it out to them with the line; they shall possess it forever; from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.” (v16-17)
Isaiah prophesies that a significant number of people, their strongholds/cities, and their land will be destroyed by God in the final days, as a prelude to Jesus’ return. Once destroyed, these lands will only be inhabitable by wild animals.
Isaiah challenges everyone to not only heed his words, but to look back on them once these things happen, to see that every prophesy has come true. Isaiah reminds us that God never breaks a promise, nor will He ever fail to fulfill a prophesy.
Sobering passages like this can motivate us to spread the gospel message of Jesus’ death, resurrection, and kingdom. I’ve heard several people speak (more accurately yell) “fire and brimstone” messages in an attempt to scare people into repentance. Though there are rare cases where an individual may need to hear that, and I’m sure those speakers mean well, those styles of messages don’t work for me personally, or most people in general.
I suggest we use Jesus’ approach of gentleness, love and grace when spreading the good news. Let’s love people in alignment with Jesus’ example, gently teaching them about sin and its outcome (“fire and brimstone”), and encourage them to pursue Jesus’ kingdom. Though it’s important we/others understand the eventual destruction of sin and those who remain unrepentant, let’s try to avoid using “fire and brimstone scare tactics” – Jesus didn’t teach this that way, so we don’t have to either.
Father God, our Steadfast and Patient Creator, You have given us much teaching and guidance. May we embrace Your examples in scripture, and also observe the Christ followers around us, so we may model a Christlike teaching/leadership style. May we primarily influence others out of love, and teach using gentleness and grace. Thank you Spirit for doing the hard work of changing hearts when we align ourselves with Your ways. May we always follow You Jesus, in every word and action. Amen.
