This chapter contains another variety of themes including a true test of our faith.
“The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out. A man’s steps are from the Lord; how then can man understand his way? The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost parts.” (v5, 24, 27)
Who of us really understands the fullness of who God created us to be? Who knows the number, content and nature of their days on earth before they happen? Who knows exactly what God will call them to do five years from now (or even five hours from now)?
There are countless things we humans just cannot understand or know in full detail. Of course we can examine the past, but many things in the present, and especially the future, are very hard (or impossible) for us to know.
This is a major component of our faith: trusting God with the future. Yes, we need faith to believe God’s past and present promises (eg. Jesus’ saving sacrifice), but our true test of faith is blindly placing the future in God’s hands.
I believe that certain anxiety and sleep disorders can be lessened (or even eliminated) by us truly putting our faith in God for the present moment, and for the future. By fully relying on Him, knowing that people’s souls are safe in His arms for all eternity, and He has ultimate control over the unknown, we can rest easier and worry far less. Let’s embrace faith to its fullest, rely on God as much as we possibly can, and breathe a huge sigh of relief.
Father God, our Wise and Discerning Lord, You have created us in intricate and wonderful ways. May we learn to have the utmost faith in You, and Your promises. May we cast all of our worries and anxieties upon You, knowing that You hold the future. May we rest easily, trusting in Your guardianship and leadership in our lives. May our words and actions reinforce our absolute faith in Your sovereignty. In the name of Jesus who wholly trusted You to the point of death, amen.
