Ecclesiastes 4

Posted on 2021-04-29 by Conqueror in Training

This chapter contains a series of proverb-like observations.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him – a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” (v9-12)

This is why God made the church to be a body of people, and also why He instituted marriage: we are stronger in groups than we are when alone. The truth is, if God’s people can maturely resolve disagreements, then we are an unstoppable force for good works and God’s glory in this world. If we remain alone, we are far more likely to fall, and stay down when we fall.

Each of us is a unique individual, with gifts, abilities and a personality which can contribute to a greater whole, the kingdom of God. Nowhere in history has the word ‘kingdom’ ever referred to a lone person – it’s always referring to a multitude of people.

Paul reinforces the concept of church unity in his letters, including: “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ… that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel…” (Php 1:27 abr) In a world of disagreement, turmoil, and division, unity and teamwork help display the glory of God by setting us apart from the ways of the world.

I encourage us to build/rebuild unity with those of like mind (other Christ followers). Though the church will still have disagreements, because all individuals have unique experiences, perspectives and perceptions, that doesn’t mean we can’t remain united by common belief.

I believe this is more important today than it ever has been – the world is more divided than ever, so it’s critical Christ followers not allow ourselves to become separated as well. Divisiveness is a powerful weapon of our enemy (he also knows we’re weaker when separated), and we must not allow him to succeed in using it against us. We must remain united in faith, standing firm in one spirit, in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.

Father God, Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ our Savior, You are the blessed three in one. You set the example of flawless unity, and we seek to follow Your lead. Please help us to truly love one another as You love us, building/rebuilding relationships that not only endure in this life, but also for an eternity in heaven. May we glorify You by our example of unity in the Spirit, and may Your name be proclaimed through our actions, forever and ever, amen.
