This chapter describes Elijah’s journey as he flees Jezebel (Ahab’s wicked wife) who sought to kill him.
“…And after the fire the sound of a low whisper… And behold, there came a voice to [Elijah] and said… ‘…you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. And Jehu… to be king over Israel, and Elisha… you shall anoint to be prophet in your place. And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put to death. Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.’ ” (v12-18 abr)
One of Elijah’s stops on his whirlwind tour (pardon the pun) included a mountain cave where there were several signs (wind, earthquake, fire) and the presence of God (a low whisper). Elijah, hiding his face in his cloak, hears the voice of God giving him instructions and prophecy for Israel’s near future.
God is clearly disappointed with Israel, to the point where He says only seven thousand (out of hundreds of thousands) will survive – those who have not abandoned Him as God. There are several prophetic passages that speak of ‘the remnant’, those who will be spared for their faith in God. A few examples include: Mi 2:12, Rev 12:17, Jl 2:32, Isa 10:20, and Rom 11:1-10 [which also references 1 Ki 19].
We are part of this remnant – those who continue to obey God and His commands even when the majority of the world do not. God promises to spare those who remain/become loyal, blessing them with an eternity in heaven: “And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” (1 Jn 2:17)
I encourage us to remain strong in Christ Jesus, and face this new year with renewed determination. “Blessed is the one who remains steadfast under trial, for when they have stood the test they will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.” (Jas 1:12) The reward for remaining true to God is far greater than any reward this world can offer.
Father God, our Lord, Savior and King, holy and mighty is Your name. We ask for Your hand of sovereignty and guidance over us as we seek to remain loyal. We the remnant need Your help to stand strong, and face the trials ahead. Thank you Jesus for sending us the Holy Spirit, who helps us follow You for all of our days. We honor, glorify and praise You, forever and ever, amen.
