This chapter tells us of God’s offer to give Solomon anything he requested, and also the well-known account of two women fighting over a child.
“…the Lord appeared to Solomon… and God said, ‘Ask what I shall give you.’ And Solomon said, ‘…And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child… Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil…’ It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. And God said to him, ‘Because you have asked this… I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you.’ ” (v5-12 abr)
God gives Solomon a ‘blank check’, allowing him to ask for anything he desires. Wisely, Solomon asks for wisdom/discernment to lead Israel. Solomon understands that he can’t lead Israel with his own strength/wisdom, and knows only God can lead His people properly.
Even though I don’t lead a nation of people, the few people I do influence are still beyond my own finite abilities to lead well. Like Solomon, I lack the required wisdom and strength to lead in a God honoring way, according to His will and teachings. I’m not sure about you, but I cannot journey through life loving people in alignment with God’s heart without God’s help.
Fortunately, we have been promised the support we need. “fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isa 41:10) “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” (Jas 1:5)
Maybe you’re like me and feel like the challenges each day are beyond your abilities, and if so, we don’t need to fear. I encourage us to remember God is with us, He will sustain us, and He will grant us what we need when we need it, as long as we faithfully ask for His help, use what we are given in alignment with His will, and give Him the glory.
Father God, our Benevolent and Generous Lord, You have blessed us beyond measure. We praise Your holy name for Your wondrous works and gifts. Thank you for being our strength and shield, our savior and provider. May we continue leaning on You for all that we need, giving You all glory, honor and praise, forever and ever, amen.
