This chapter also contains the death of David, and the establishment of Solomon’s reign/kingdom.
“Moreover, you also know what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, how he dealt with the two commanders of the armies of Israel… Act therefore according to your wisdom, but do not let his gray head go down to Sheol in peace. But deal loyally with the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table… And there is also with you Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjaminite from Bahurim, who cursed me with a grievous curse… do not hold him guiltless, for you are a wise man. You will know what you ought to do to him, and you shall bring his gray head down with blood to Sheol.” (v5-9 abr)
David’s final instructions to Solomon include the unresolved issues that David did not deal with while he was king. He left Joab unpunished for his multiple murders, Shimei (the one who cursed him as he fled Absalom) on whom he had mercy, and of course his son Adonijah as well. Solomon’s first acts as king were to tie up David’s loose ends.
I’m not sure about you, but I have countless unfinished items on my to-do list – decluttering, debts to repay, disorganization to fix, accounts and passwords to bequeath, etc. If I were to die today (which, Lord willing, will not happen) then I would leave a large number of messes (literal and figurative) for my spouse and kids to look after.
Inherited mess is not really a Christ-honoring legacy that people wish to (or deserve to) receive. My encouragement to myself first, and you second, is to diligently work toward cleaning up loose ends. It’s important to leave as little mess, and as much blessing behind as we can for those who would follow.
Jesus didn’t leave the disciples a big mess to clean up when He departed, He left the gift of the Holy Spirit and the church (blessings). Let’s do what we can to bless those around us by making our future transition as clean and simple as possible.
Father God, our Heavenly Lord and King, You are gracious and merciful beyond measure. Thank you for the days with which You have blessed us. Thank you for the strength and wisdom to accomplish great works for You and Your kingdom. May we rely on Your guidance, wisdom and strength as we seek to leave a legacy of blessing for those who will come after us. We love You and thank you for Your support, both now and forever, amen.
