In this chapter David, in front of all of Israel, commissions Solomon to build the house of the Lord.
“And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever. Be strong and courageous and do it. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for the Lord God, even my God, is with you. He will not leave you or forsake you, until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished.” (v9,20)
These words are reminiscent of what Moses and God said to Joshua when we has commissioned as Israel’s leader. It would seem that it’s important to remind our next generation of several key points:
– God, the Lord of your forefathers, is with you and will never leave or forsake you unless you first forsake Him
– God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and ever present
– You are to serve God and His will, not your own will or the will of other people
– You can be strong, courageous, and fearless because God is with you
– You need His help, and often the help of His people, in order to accomplish His work (eg. build His kingdom), this is not a solo endeavor
These are powerful reminders that everyone should take to heart, not just rulers and kings. These reminders are just as powerful for you and I as they were for Solomon or Joshua.
I encourage us to fully embrace these truths. If you’re like me and have trouble remembering these things from day to day, then perhaps writing them down (or printing them out) and placing them in a prominent place would be helpful. I have all kinds of reminders strewn about my office, and when I see one, I do my best to read it and remember the truth it speaks.
Father God, our Glorious and Magnificent King, holy and mighty is Your precious name. Father thank you for the consistent reminders of who You are. Your entire word is a reminder of Your magnificence, and we are also reminded of our role as Your children and servants. Father thank you for the strength, courage and boldness You provide, and may we learn to pursue Your will alone. We honor, glorify, praise and thank You, forever and ever, amen.
