This chapter consists of David commissioning his son Solomon to build the house of the Lord.
” ‘Now, my son, the Lord be with you, so that you may succeed in building the house of the Lord your God, as he has spoken concerning you. Only, may the Lord grant you discretion and understanding, that when he gives you charge over Israel you may keep the law of the Lord your God. Then you will prosper if you are careful to observe the statutes and the rules that the Lord commanded Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Fear not; do not be dismayed. With great pains I have provided for the house of the Lord… Arise and work! The Lord be with you!’ ” (v11-14a,16b-c)
David not only commissions Solomon, he also provides most/all of the materials, and the workers so that Solomon would be successful in the task. Most importantly, David encourages Solomon to rely on God, so that Solomon (and all of Israel) would prosper.
What kind of legacy are we going to leave when we die? I realize we can’t all leave millions of pounds of precious metals to the next generation, however, that’s not what God primarily wants us to leave behind.
God wants us to leave:
– Reminders of His glorious deeds: “One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.” (Psa 145:4)
– Good examples and instructions: “What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me – practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” (Php 4:9)
– A legacy of service: “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:” (1 Pt 4:10)
Just as David reminded Solomon to abide in God, we too can remind future generations to do the same. This is mostly accomplished by how we live our lives, and how we interact with those around us.
I encourage us to speak testimonies of how God is working in our lives, be an example of Christlike behavior, and serve others as Jesus served. In doing so, we will help model Christlikeness for the next generation of Christ followers. That’s a legacy worth leaving behind.
Father God, our Lord and King, You are magnificent in character and mighty in deeds. Father may we learn to exhibit Christlike behavior in all that we say and do. Not only is this important for our own long-term benefit, but it’s also critical as an example to future generations. May we honor and glorify You with every word and action, teaching those around us to do the same. In the name of Jesus, the one who glorified You with every breath, amen.
