Today is resurrection Sunday, when we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. Why do we celebrate this event? Because it speaks to the sovereignty and power of Jesus/God. Not only can God overcome physical death, He overcomes spiritual death as well.
God raising Jesus from the dead also brings us ultimate hope – that we too have overcome spiritual death, and will live for all eternity in heaven with Jesus. Defeating spiritual death (the penalty of sin) was only possible through this one-time, historic event, of Jesus’ death and resurrection.
I offer a prayer of celebration and praise for our freedom from death.
Father God, we give thanks to You, for You are good, and Your steadfast love endures forever. You O Lord are our God, we will exalt You and praise Your name, for You are faithful and sure, having planned and completed great wonders. Holy, holy holy, is the Lord God almighty, who was and is and is to come. Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they existed and were created. Jesus, we will not fear, for You are the first and the last, the living one. You died, and are now alive forevermore, holding the keys of Death and Hades. We know You will swallow up death forever, and the Lord God will wipe away tears from our faces, and the reproach of Your people will be taken away, for You our Lord have spoken. We know our old selves were crucified with You in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. Blessed be You O God, and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. Amen.
