This chapter focuses on Jesus’ authority and knowledge for teaching scripture (that is, the word(s) of God).
“…Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. The Jews therefore marveled, saying, ‘How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?’ So Jesus answered them, ‘My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood…’ The crowd answered, ‘You have a demon!…’ ” (v14-18, 20 abr)
The crowd, which included religious officials, could find no fault in Jesus’ doctrine and interpretation of scripture. Their only recourse was to attack Jesus’ credentials: which rabbi taught Him (He didn’t have an earthly teacher) and by Whose authority He taught. Apparently it was easier for them to believe He was demon-possessed than to believe He was sent and taught by His Father in Heaven.
Contrary to what our culture (and that doubting voice in our minds) may say, we don’t need formal seminary degrees or doctorates to talk to people about Jesus and teach the word of God – all we need is a personal relationship with God and His indwelling Holy Spirit. Of course, spending time with God in prayer and scripture is a requirement, and learning from other veterans of the faith certainly helps. Let’s not be discouraged by this world, but speak the gospel message regardless of any lack in credentials – our authority comes from Jesus Himself, and no human authority can supersede His.
Father God, our Magnificent Teacher and source of authority, we seek to honor and serve You. Please equip us through Your indwelling Spirit so we may spread the gospel message with our words and actions. Please teach us all we need to know, and grant us the authority of Jesus, to help build His kingdom on earth. Please help us not to be deterred by naysaying or a ‘lack of credentials’, and carry on Jesus’ legacy. In Your holy and awesome name we seek to fulfill Your will and serve Your people, amen.
