It’s very difficult for me to choose a ‘favorite book of the Bible’ (they’re all so good), though John is certainly one of my favorites. This first chapter dives in deep from the first verse, and John doesn’t let up for the entire book. We learn of Jesus, John the Baptist, and the first few disciples who are called.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (v1-5, 14)
Jesus is the Word. In Him, and through Him all things (and people) were created. Jesus is our light (guide) and our life (literally, and spiritually). He overcomes sin and darkness, and He cannot be defeated by evil, for He is God’s one and only Son, full of grace and truth.
Historical records (both biblical and extra-biblical) prove that Jesus existed and walked the earth. John does not leave any room for interpretation regarding Jesus’ divinity – He has always been, and always will be, one of the Godhead, the Holy Trinity. So we really have two options – believe that Jesus is the Son of God, sent to die for our sins and save us, or, disbelieve the Bible and risk eternal separation from the Godhead. The choice is ours.
Father God, our Sovereign Lord and Everlasting Creator, You have created all things through and with Jesus Christ Your Son. You have also redeemed us through Him. Please open the hearts and minds of us and our neighbors to Your truth, bringing light to the darkness the enemy employs. Please give us eyes to see, and ears to hear the wonders of Your mercy and grace, and follow Jesus as our Rabbi, forever and ever, amen.
