This chapter contains accounts of Jesus sending out 72 disciples for ministry, a lament for unrepentant peoples, rejoicing in the Father’s will, the parable of the good Samaritan, and Mary listening at Jesus’ feet while Martha was serving.
“The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!’ And he said to them, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.’ ” (v17-20)
Following a very successful missions trip, Jesus’ disciples report that when they speak and act in His name, not only are people repentant and healed, the demons themselves will flee. Jesus isn’t being a killjoy, though He reminds them not to be overconfident in achievement / accomplishment / themselves. Yes, it’s good to celebrate God’s work and His power, though we must be careful to let credit remain with God / Jesus. If we’re not careful, sinful pride can leak in and poison our hearts, and we can fall just as quickly / dramatically as Satan did (“like lightning from heaven”).
I encourage us to celebrate God for His mighty works of salvation and restoration. I also caution us (myself included) to not get hung up on what “we did”, or become prideful in our service. I know it is counter-cultural, but ‘it is not about us’. When that famous question comes to mind: “What’s in it for me?”, just remember we’re going to receive the ultimate prize: an eternity with our God in Heaven. Ministry successes and our God-given gifts / blessings are for building Jesus’ kingdom and for the Father’s glory – period.
Father God, our Mighty Lord of Generous Blessings, we praise Your holy and awesome name. Spirit please guide and empower us according to Father’s will, and please help us to be strong ministers for Jesus’ kingdom. Please keep our hearts humble, and remind us that our service is for God’s glory, and our eternal benefit, as well as the eternal benefit of those whom we serve. To You Father be all honor, glory, and praise, forever and ever. In the name of Jesus we serve You. Amen.
