Luke 8

There is much happening here: the parable of the sower and the its purpose, a lamp under a jar analogy, Jesus’ commentary on spiritual family versus blood family, Jesus calming a raging storm, casting a legion of demons out of a man into a herd of pigs, healing a woman with chronic bleeding, and raising an official’s daughter from the dead.

“…’To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that “seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.” Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word… And the ones on the rock are those who… receive [the word] with joy… they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but… they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life… As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.’ ” (v10-15 abr)

On the surface, parables are short stories with great moral truth designed so that those who are spiritually sensitive and seeking will understand (such as His followers), and those who don’t seek Him will merely hear ‘a story’ and dismiss it (it doesn’t take root like seed falling on the path).

A second-layer to this parable talks specifically about how those who hear the word(s) of God will be affected based on their spiritual curiosity. It’s essentially a parable within a parable. This is likely my favorite parable from Jesus due to its double-depth.

Please don’t fall into the traps of being ‘rocky or thorny soil’. I urge us to seek God humbly as “good soil”, so He may create “honest and good hearts” within, teaching us His word(s) (and His Word [Jesus]), so we may “hold it fast” in our hearts, and “bear [spiritual] fruit with patience”.

Father God, our Magnificent Creator and Lord of Truth, we praise Your holy name for You alone are worthy of our worship. Please keep our hearts humble and fertile, so we may embrace and follow Your Word / word(s). Please work in and through us to spread your word, and till the soil of others’ hearts, so they may choose to receive Jesus and bear fruit. In the name of Jesus Your Son, amen.
