This chapter mainly outlines the ministry of John the Baptist, with some additional information on Jesus’ genealogy.
“[John] said… ‘Bear fruits in keeping with repentance… Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire… Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise… Collect no more than you are authorized to do… Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.’ ” (v7-9, 11-14 abr)
Isaiah prophesied that John would prepare the way for Jesus. He fulfilled this by teaching the themes Jesus taught (even before Jesus taught them), and calling people to repentance / baptism.
If you ever wonder what it looks like to follow Jesus and love our neighbors, please read any scripture (such as this one) that gives practical examples. Part of loving our neighbors is not harming them (eg. cheating / extorting / oppressing them). We can be gracious, merciful, sacrificially generous, and restore / honor those who are mistreated.
By introducing them to the gospel message, and proclaiming the good news of Jesus’ kingdom and salvation, we partner with the Holy Spirit as John did. Let’s prepare the way for Jesus’ (second) coming, proclaiming “He who is mightier than I is coming”, and we need to be ready for Him.
Father God, Lord of Love and Creator of the Universe, we praise Your awesome and righteous name. Thank you Spirit for empowering us to share Jesus and His kingdom with all who will listen. Please minister to our neighbors’ hearts through the love of Jesus within us, and prepare us all for seeing Him face to face. Amen.
