This chapter clarifies God’s thoughts on righteousness and justice because there was clearly some confusion among the people. It reminds me of Paul’s letters to the churches to clear up misunderstandings.
” ‘The soul who sins shall die… The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. But if a wicked person turns away from all his sins… and keeps all my statutes and does what is just and right, he shall surely live… None of the transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him… Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, declares the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live?’ ” (v20-23 abr)
God clarifies that each person is personally responsible for their own sin, and their repentance. God certainly does not take any pleasure in people choosing wickedness over righteousness. In Luke 15 Jesus tells three parables about rejoicing over that which has been lost and then found again. God rejoices every time a person repents of their sin and receives Jesus as their savior.
Though we’re not ultimately responsible for anyone else’s sin or salvation, that doesn’t completely excuse us from their lives. Jesus calls us to active roles in the lives of our neighbors, partnering with Him, so the Spirit can minister to their hearts and affect spiritual renewal. I encourage us to partner as closely with God as we can, obeying His prompts, so Jesus’ kingdom can be enlarged. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of room in heaven for everyone, and God does the heavy lifting – we’re simply called to obedience.
Father God, our Righteous Creator, and the Purifier of our Hearts, You are worthy of our obedience and praise. May we honor and glorify You in our words and actions, and partner with Your Spirit to encourage others to follow Jesus. Please minister to all who will listen, softening their hearts and minds into fertile soil for Your word to take root. Please help us to choose righteousness over wickedness in every thought, word, and deed, from this day forward, amen.
