Jeremiah 46

Posted on 2022-09-06 by Conqueror in Training

This poetic chapter is a prophecy of destruction for Egypt where the Hebrew people fled, and it’s also a promise of deliverance for God’s people.

“A beautiful heifer is Egypt, but a biting fly from the north has come upon her. Even her hired soldiers… have turned and fled together… for the day of their calamity has come upon them, the time of their punishment. But fear not, O Jacob my servant, nor be dismayed, O Israel, for behold, I will save you from far away, and your offspring from the land of their captivity. Jacob shall return and have quiet and ease, and none shall make him afraid… for I am with you. I will make a full end of all the nations to which I have driven you, but of you I will not make a full end. I will discipline you in just measure, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.’ ” v(20-21, 27-28 abr)

This prophecy from God / Jeremiah is bittersweet – it spells out destruction for those who choose a sin over our Creator God. It also promises deliverance for God’s people, informing us that we will not suffer eternal destruction or consequences (though there will still be temporary consequences for our sin).

God is righteous – He cannot leave sin unpunished. Yet, God is a merciful and loving Father, disciplining His children in the hope that they will learn to listen and obey more readily. Would it be easier and less work for God to simply wipe us all out? Honestly, yes, that would be easier. However, true love doesn’t normally take the easy path. Let’s praise God for His lovingkindness, giving us far more chances to repent and receive His grace than we deserve.

Father God, our Creator and Sovereign Lord, You are gracious and merciful beyond our imaginations. Thank you for Your steadfast love and immense patience. Thank you for Your forgiveness made possible through Jesus, and Your guidance through the Spirit. May embrace the grace we’ve been shown, and listen to Your voice as best we can, honoring Your legacy and bringing You glory. We praise You in the name of Jesus our Redeemer, amen.
