In this chapter God uses the nomadic Rechabites as an example of obedience to teach His people.
“Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Go and say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will you not receive instruction and listen to my words? declares the Lord. The command that Jonadab the son of Rechab gave to his sons, to drink no wine, has been kept, and they drink none to this day, for they have obeyed their father’s command. I have spoken to you persistently, but you have not listened to me.’ ” (v13-14)
A nomadic tribe of people living in Judah, who are not Hebrews by lineage, were given strict rules by their forefathers. These people steadfastly obeyed their commandments which included never drinking wine or owning permanent property.
God compares these people to His own, basically saying / asking “These gentiles can follow their rules for generations, without constant reminders. Why don’t you obey when I constantly remind you through my word and prophets?”
Let’s pray for soft hearts and willing spirits. The people of God allowed themselves to become deaf to God’s word, and stubborn against His commandments. Let’s do our utmost to remain steadfast to our Lord’s leading, like the Rechabites remained obedient to their teachings.
Father God, our Mighty Lord and Wise Creator, You are powerful in word and deed. Please soften our sin-hardened hearts. Please renew our stubborn minds. Please teach us Your ways as many times as it takes, remaining patient with us as we learn obedience. Thank you for the countless examples of obedience (and disobedience) You have given us. May we learn to honor, glorify, obey and praise you, with every word and action, as long as we shall live, amen.
