This chapter is a plea for God’s mercy and forgiveness, it reads something like a ‘sinner’s prayer’.
“We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. Be not so terribly angry, O Lord, and remember not iniquity forever. Behold, please look, we are all your people.” (v6, 8-9)
You may have heard the term ‘sinner’s prayer’. It essentially refers to a prayer where one confesses their sin, asks God for forgiveness, and throws themselves at His feet, requesting mercy for one’s crimes against God.
I think a common misconception is that we only pray a ‘sinner’s prayer’ once in our lives, the first time we confess our sin and commit ourselves to following Jesus. The truth is, we can (and should) be saying a ‘sinner’s prayer’ every time we sin. God’s forgiveness and mercy are an ongoing need for those of us who sin consistently throughout our entire lives (I believe that includes everyone, by the way).
Let’s throw ourselves at God’s feet today, ask for forgiveness / mercy, and (re)commit to following Jesus with the indwelling Holy Spirit’s assistance. This deep, daily, Trinitarian approach to humbling ourselves and committing ourselves to honoring God will help us remain rooted in Him, and sin less frequently going forward.
Father God, our Magnificent and Glorious Lord, we thank You for Your infinite and undeserved forgiveness and mercy upon us. We see the importance of humbling ourselves daily, recognizing our sin and need for forgiveness, so we throw ourselves at Your feet. Holy Spirit, may we partner with You and grow through Your guidance, so we may exhibit Christlike attributes in our words and actions. Jesus would You please continue to be our example and King, leading us to build Your kingdom here on earth, until we reach Your kingdom in Heaven. All honor, glory, and praise be unto You, our Blessed Three-in-One, forever and ever, amen.
