Isaiah 43

Posted on 2022-03-23 by Conqueror in Training

This chapter describes God’s desired salvation for His people and the role of provider He offers, yet there is clearly some lament because God’s people do not take Him up on His offers.

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. Yet you did not call upon me, O Jacob; but you have been weary of me, O Israel! …you have burdened me with your sins; you have wearied me with your iniquities. (v1b-3a, 22, 24b)

Imagine someone who has been arrested for many severe crimes, and is standing trial. They have been proven guilty and are about to be sentenced to death, when an innocent stranger offers their life in exchange for the criminal’s pardon. The judge inexplicably agrees to the trade. The criminal then foolishly says “I don’t want your help, I don’t need your help, I don’t need to be pardoned, I haven’t done anything wrong”.

Those who decline God’s free gift of salvation are somewhat like this fictional criminal, who are offered forgiveness and freedom in exchange for Jesus’ sacrifice. Yet, for some reason, they throw away the “get out of jail free card” and continue in their ways of blindness / darkness.

I encourage us to humbly accept any help the Lord our God is offering. Should we go on sinning and continue taking advantage of God’s forgiveness? Not intentionally, no. It would be foolish for us to ignore the free gift of salvation or intentionally abuse God’s love for us. I also warn us against complacency or ungratefulness – let’s praise God continually and never forget Jesus’ significant sacrifice which made salvation and forgiveness possible.

Father God, our Glorious, Righteous, and Forgiving Lord, You are understanding and compassionate beyond description. Thank you for the infinite love (and forgiveness) You have offered us. Please help us to embrace Your blessings, and not take them for granted. May we cherish and value every gift from You, and bless others by sharing Your gifts with them. May we love, honor, obey and serve You, with each and every breath, amen.
