This chapter describes the fall of (commercial) Babylon, and includes prophesies against other nations as well.
“Then he who saw cried out: ‘Upon a watchtower I stand, O Lord, continually by day, and at my post I am stationed whole nights. And behold, here come riders, horsemen in pairs!’… ‘Fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the carved images of her gods he has shattered to the ground.’ ” (v8-9 abr)
This passages reminds me of the importance of knowing scripture well, and thoroughly. I’m not saying we need to memorize the entire Bible verbatim, however, knowing its overall content and being able to find passages is very important.
I say this because this scene of (commercial) Babylon falling is repeated in Revelation at the fall of (spiritual) Babylon: “And he called out with a mighty voice, ‘Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a dwelling place for demons, a haunt for every unclean spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast.’ ” (Rev 18:2)
The more familiar we become with scripture, the easier it will be to pick up on themes and God’s bigger picture. It will also make evangelism and discipling a little easier, enabling us to answer curiosities and questions. Peter tells us: “…in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect…” (1 Pt 3:15).
We are encouraged to gently and respectfully teach people from scripture, being prepared to respond at a moment’s notice. We can’t do that (easily) if we don’t know God’s word well enough. One more clarifying note: all Christ followers are expected to teach and/or lead by example, not just those with pastor/teacher in their job description, so I encourage us all to be prepared with scriptural responses.
Father God, our Magnificent and Generous Lord, You offer us much guidance and wisdom. Thank you for the gift of Your word – please minister to us through it, and help us to retain it, so we may share it with our neighbors. Please help us to share respectfully and gently, out of love and compassion, in a Christlike manner. Please give us ministry and discipleship opportunities so Jesus may be glorified and praised, with our every word and action, amen.
