This chapter is a prophesy both against, and for Egypt. Their destruction is foretold, though we also learn about five cities which will repent and follow the Lord of hosts.
“In that day there will be five cities in the land of Egypt that speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance to the Lord of hosts… In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt… When they cry to the Lord because of oppressors, he will send them a savior and defender, and deliver them… And the Lord will strike Egypt, striking and healing, and they will return to the Lord, and he will listen to their pleas for mercy and heal them.” (18-22 abr)
I feel this passage really speaks to the heart of God. He doesn’t discipline people out of spite or hatred, He does so out of a desire for them to repent and return to Him. Not all will return to God when their sin is exposed, though those who do experience deliverance and healing. This is still possible today because God has sent His “savior and defender to deliver us”.
When we sin we can return to God immediately. Our sin is already forgiven, our debt already paid. Yes, we also often need to reconcile with people we have hurt by our sin. By returning to God, reconciling with our neighbors, and encouraging others to return to God, Jesus’ kingdom is strengthened and His name is glorified. We become better ambassadors for Christ, and we proclaim His name until His return. If we have unconfessed sin hanging over us, why wait? Let’s repent and plead for the Lord’s mercy today, so we can serve Him with a renewed and healed spirit tomorrow.
Father God, our Merciful and Gracious Lord of hosts, we praise Your holy and awesome name. You have blessed us so greatly with Jesus our savior and defender. May we never stray from You too long or too far. May we confess our sin often and quickly, seeking reconciliation and healing for our spirit. May we embrace Your love and guidance without hesitation, and exude Jesus’ love to this world. We seek to honor, praise and obey You, forever and ever, amen.
