This chapter continues the judgement against Moab, though it focuses more on the remnant that will survive the destruction.
“Give counsel; grant justice; make your shade like night at the height of noon; shelter the outcasts; do not reveal the fugitive; let the outcasts of Moab sojourn among you; be a shelter to them from the destroyer.” (v3-4a)
When God destroys the pagan nation for their sin, there will be a remnant of outcasts who are spared. God’s people are called to be counsellors, protectors, and just safeguards for those survivors.
We have a similar calling today to protect and serve those who could be saved into God’s kingdom. It’s not for us to judge who will be saved or not, so we’re simply called to serve and safeguard everyone (to love our neighbors). We don’t know who will be joining us one day in the kingdom of God, and our actions of loving someone may be the catalyst that encourages them to follow Jesus. So, we are to faithfully obey God’s calling and love everybody.
I encourage us to serve and protect everyone we can, especially those that are typically mistreated / ignored by the world (the “widows, orphans and outcasts” referred to in scripture). There are countless people who are disadvantaged by circumstance – ex-convicts, homeless, gang members, widows, orphans, veterans, sick, elderly, etc. We can’t walk down the street without seeing someone in need of God’s love. Let’s be a shelter and a hiding place for those God loves, doing our utmost to reflect Jesus’ love.
Father God, our Shelter and Rock, You serve and protect us to the point of death on a cross. Father please guide and provide in such a way that we may extend Your generosity and love to those who are in need. May we love every neighbor as Jesus would, especially those who are disadvantaged by our imperfect society. May we be the hands and feet of Jesus, exuding salt and light in everything we say and do, forever and ever, amen.
