Nehemiah 8

Posted on 2021-10-25 by Conqueror in Training

This chapter is packed with important events – Ezra reads from the Law of God (Pentateuch, Gen-Deu), the Levites interpret it, and the Feast of Booths is observed.

“And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, ‘This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep.’ For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law. And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.” (v9, 12)

The Jews were initially grieved when they heard the law being read, probably because God convicted their hearts of their sin, and they feared He was a God of wrath. Yet, with the prophets and Levites explaining that He is a God of love and forgiveness, the people were able to understand and joyfully celebrate.

This is one of the key reasons I think scripture was originally designed to be studied in groups: people, with the Spirit’s insight, can help each other interpret and understand God’s heart. Studying God’s word alone is still a good thing, though it becomes an even better thing when we collaborate on what we’re learning.

God designed community for a purpose – to love and support one another. We each have our own unique combination of strengths and growth areas, making us helpful to other people, and also dependent on them. If we’ve misunderstood something (like the Jews did), others can collaboratively help us understand.

I strongly encourage us to continue meeting with other Christ followers as we are able, and discuss spiritual matters. In doing so our eyes will be opened, we will grow, and we will help others grow too – it’s an important part of our journeys. The original disciples learned best as a group, and so do we.

Father God, our Glorious and Benevolent Lord, You bless us with a rich and vibrant community. Spirit please guide us as we meet and grow with other Christ followers. May we be constantly hungry for a greater understanding of You Father, while simultaneously teaching and being taught. In the name of Jesus we honor, praise, love and adore You, forever and ever, amen.
