This chapter describes the ongoing threat from Judah’s enemies, and some of the precautions taken for protection.
“…half of my servants worked on construction, and half held the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail… Those who carried burdens… labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other. And each of the builders had his sword strapped at his side while he built… ‘The work is great and widely spread… In the place where you hear the… trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.’ ” (v16-20 abr)
The threat to Judah’s safety while rebuilding was so great, that they prepared themselves to fight at a moment’s notice. Not only was every person armed, many worked with one hand and held their weapon in the other. In addition, there was a trumpet warning system that would rally everybody to the site of an attack, because they were spread out working on the wall.
These tactics are still critical for us today. I don’t recommend carrying physical weapons (there may be some laws against that), but weapons which are spiritual in nature. Ephesians 6 tells us to be prepared with the full armor of God which includes a sword and shield to defend us when our enemy attacks.
If you’ve been a Christ follower for any length of time, you know that our enemy the devil is relentless and will attack from any side without notice. He strikes where we’re weak or complacent, catching us if we’re not on guard. Why does Satan employ such cowardly tactics? Because when we’re prepared, and “our God fights for us”, he knows he doesn’t stand a chance.
Let’s strive to be vigilant and prepared for any attack, and also be prepared to help defend our siblings in Christ when the trumpet blares. We need to know our scriptures, have a vibrant prayer life, and have Christ-honoring friends so we can have each others’ backs. If you’re unprepared in any of those areas, I encourage you to partner with God to become fully prepared, because our enemy is prowling around like a lion seeking to strike when you least expect it. Don’t let your guard down, and don’t abandon a friend in need, because Satan will strike without mercy.
Father God, our Rock and Fortress, You protect us from the enemy’s advances. Please help us be prepared and vigilant for Satan’s cunning attacks, both to protect ourselves and those around us. May we honor and glorify You in these preparations, and give You all of the glory for any victories. May we rest securely in Your protective presence, each and every day, both now and forever, amen.
