This chapter is unique in the way it really emphasizes and praises the qualities of a God-honoring woman. Let’s remember that in ancient times women generally went unrecognized, especially for their critical roles and hard work. They were viewed as property, something less than human. Thankfully society has come a long way in giving women their due honor and respect (though I must point out men and women still hold different, equally important roles according to scripture).
“An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” (v1, 17, 20, 25-26, 30)
In summary, a God-honoring woman will be a diligent and hard worker, who serves her household, her community, and her God with her words and actions. She is worthy of recognition and respect.
Though the Bible is full of inspiring people who had deep relationships with God and their communities, we have equally inspiring people around us today. I know several inspiring women (including my wife). Do you know any? Perhaps you are a God-honoring woman.
I urge all of us to recognize and encourage the God-honoring people in our lives – not out of a false, patronizing attitude or a desire to manipulate them; but out of a genuine gratefulness for their service and the positive example they set for those around them. Please take some time to recognize at least one person who inspires your walk with God, and thank them for their Christlike example – bonus points if one of the people you recognize is a woman.
Father God, our Glorious and Awe-Inspiring Lord, You are a wise and discerning Creator. You created mankind in Your own image, male and female You created us. Thank you for the many God-honoring women in our lives. May we honor and respect them, thanking them for their diligent and inspiring service. May we also recognize and honor all people of every tribe, nation, and ethnicity as being created in Your image. May we love them generously, and be shining examples of Your glory here on earth, each and every day, in the name of Jesus, amen.
