There are some odd sayings here that made me re-read them a few times. Let’s unpack a few.
– “Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?” (v4) All emotions can be used for good or for evil. The evil side of jealousy is considered worse than that of anger or wrath. Anger / wrath are often provoked, whereas jealousy is usually unprovoked, and comes from a maligned heart.
– “Do not forsake your friend and your father’s friend, and do not go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity. Better is a neighbor who is near than a brother who is far away.” (v10) This verse indicates that when we are in dire need of help, it is better to seek help quickly (nearby) than to prolong the struggle too long.
– “Whoever blesses his neighbor with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, will be counted as cursing.” (v14) Timing is important. Even though we have the best of intentions and mean to bless someone, if they are not ready / willing to receive that blessing, they may receive it as a curse instead.
– “The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and a man is tested by his praise.” (v21) Do you want to know someone’s character? Listen to what those who know them best are saying. Chances are, the average opinion will generally reflect that person’s character (some exceptions apply, of course).
Though today’s themes vary, I encourage us to perform spot-checks on our actions and words. Are we using our God-given emotions in a God-honoring way? Are we seeking help quickly and often? Are we discerning the best time / place / tone when trying to bless / help someone? Are we carefully fact-checking the information we hear about people, and are the sources reputable? These are all things we can consider on a daily basis. I encourage us to plead with the Holy Spirit to give us discernment and good judgement for each and every unique circumstance.
Father God, our Discerning and Benevolent Friend, we humbly ask for Your help. Please empower us through Your Spirit to know right from wrong, and good timing from poor timing. Please help us discern how to apply ourselves in each unique situation, and bless those around us without accidentally cursing them. Please show us any warning signs in our lives, and encourage us to seek help quickly. May we remain humble and rely fully on You for all guidance, both now and forever, amen.
