This chapter contains a variety of Jesus’ teaching topics including humility, temptation, reconciliation, forgiveness, and the lost sheep parable.
“Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven… What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.” (v4,12-14)
Jesus uses children as examples of the ideal God-honoring person, since children have a clear humility and reliance upon their caregiver(s). Young children have authenticity and integrity – they speak what is on their mind, rarely question what they’re told, seldom speak falsehoods, and are constantly learning (just a few examples). Jesus teaches that we should all have childlike qualities, and that every child of God is precious in His sight, worthy of His effort and Jesus’ loving, saving sacrifice.
If we’re ever wondering what the next steps on our faith walk can be, I suggest we prayerfully seek to improve our childlike qualities, and partner with God to seek and save the lost. God has a vast desire for us to seek Him like a child seeks a nurturing caregiver, and a vast love for those who are lost. By pursuing these two things we are fulfilling the two greatest commandments – loving the Lord our God with every fiber of our being, and loving our neighbors.
Father God, our Glorious and Loving Lord, You have mercy and compassion beyond description. Your words and Your actions prove Your love for all who bear Your image, and testify to Your heart’s desires. May we partner with You to become more childlike in nature and seek those who are lost. Would Your Spirit work within us to humble our hearts, and work through us to love those around us. In the holy and merciful name of Jesus we praise You, forever and ever, amen.
