This chapter has several snippets of Jesus’ continued ministry including some teachings on the Sabbath, blasphemy, signs, prophesies, spiritual warfare, and the family of God. Unfortunately, we can’t cover them all in detail in this overview.
” ‘I tell you, something greater than the temple is here… For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath… I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned… For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.’ ” (v6,8,36-37,50)
This chapter really shows Jesus’ absolute authority and sovereignty which is given to Him by the Father. He makes some very bold claims including:
– He is Lord of the Sabbath
– He is the fulfillment of prophesy
– He is God’s / the Spirit’s conduit with power over the spiritual realm
– He is able to forgive sin
– He has the authority to judge people
– He knows people’s thoughts
– He interprets scripture correctly
– He prophesies of the future
– He proclaims who is and is not part of God’s family
There is no misunderstanding here, Jesus is quite clearly claiming to be God’s Son with God’s authority and power.
All of us who read passages like this are forced to make a decision – do we truly believe Jesus is who He claims to be, or do we believe like the Pharisees that He is a blasphemer and in league with the devil?
If we believe Jesus’ claims then I encourage us to not only believe in our hearts, but also live out that belief with our words and actions. Integrity is reinforcing our beliefs with our words and actions (making us internally consistent). Let’s honor Jesus and glorify God through our Christ-honoring integrity.
Heavenly Father, our Wise and Loving Provider, we praise Your holy name. Thank you for sending Your Son to set a flawless example of obedience, and teach us Your ways firsthand. May we believe His claims and live out those beliefs with integrity. May our integrity bring glory to You, and inspiration to those around us, for many generations to come. In the name of Jesus, son of God we thank You. Amen.
