This chapter describes Jesus commissioning the twelve disciples to travel throughout Israel proclaiming “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
” ‘Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.’ ” (v34,37-39)
Jesus is very clear that there is a war happening – not a literal war with swords (in most cases), but a spiritual war. There are two different kingdoms – God’s Kingdom, and the enemy’s, which have been locked in battle since Satan was banished from heaven. The Bible has already proclaimed Jesus’ victory, though for now the battle rages on.
Jesus is recruiting spiritual soldiers and servants – those who are willing to take up His cause (cross) and obey His commands. In obedience to Him we are proclaiming death and Hell are defeated, and God’s Kingdom will reign eternally. We are giving our lives to His cause, yet He says we will find our (eternal) lives as a reward for this sacrifice.
I encourage us to surrender our selfish selves (our ‘lives’) to Jesus’ compassionate cause. His cause is to rescue all of the prisoners of war that the enemy holds captive, before He has to destroy evil once and for all (which sadly includes all those who support Satan’s kingdom).
Let’s keep fighting the good fight – wielding the sword of the Spirit, breastplate of righteousness, belt of truth, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and a firm foundation of God’s word (see Eph 6:10-17). We must stand strong, never surrender to the enemy, and glorify God each step of the way, for He is our Sovereign Lord and King. Let’s loudly proclaim the Kingdom of God is at hand, which grants freedom and justice for all who believe.
Father God, our Sovereign King and Glorious Lord, holy, holy, holy is Your name. You have equipped us with Your Spirit, Your armor, and the weapons of Your kingdom. May we use them wisely in obedience to Your Son and Spirit. May we rescue the captives and bring much glory to Your name. May Your Kingdom reign forever and ever amen!
