Matthew 4

Posted on 2021-05-31 by Conqueror in Training

This chapter describes Jesus’ temptation, his early ministry, and the calling of Simon (Peter), Andrew, James and John.

“Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “He will command his angels concerning you,” and “On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.” ‘ Jesus said to him, ‘Again it is written, “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.” ‘ ” (v5-7)

There aren’t any unimportant lessons to learn from Jesus – they are all crucial, including this one. Jesus sets an example of why it’s critical to really know God’s word – His written, spoken, and Living Word (Jesus).

Satan is extremely clever and deceiving – he’s basically a professional con artist. He will use our inexperience with God’s word to try tricking us into sinning (just as he did in the garden with Adam and Eve). If we don’t know God’s word well enough, it will be an easy trap into which we can fall (I have fallen for this more than once myself).

I strongly encourage us to spend time with God in prayer, scripture, and service. The stronger our relationship with God and Jesus becomes, the harder it will be for Satan to trick us. The more we rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance, the less we will rely on the world and those who would deceive us.

Father God, our Glorious and Wise Lord, we praise Your holy and magnificent name. You are the author and creator of everything that is good and righteous, and we are in desperate need of Your help. Our inexperience and foolishness open the door for deception, and Your Spirit is our only hope. Please lead and guide us moment by moment, guarding our minds against attacks and lies from our enemy, and keeping us focused on Your words. May we rarely stray from Your paths, and be an example for others to do the same. Jesus we praise You, and look to You as a mentor and guide, forever and ever, amen.
