Ecclesiastes 3

Posted on 2021-04-28 by Conqueror in Training

This chapter has two main themes: there is a time for everything, and finding joy in one’s labor for God is the most fulfilling pursuit (similar to ch2).

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.” (v1-4,7-8)

If these words sound familiar, perhaps you’ve read this chapter before, or heard the famous song “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by The Byrds. These words bring to mind the adage “everything in moderation”, proclaiming that almost anything we do here on earth has “a time and a place”.

We could add more items to this list – a time to work, and a time to play; a time to rest, and a time to become tired; a time to encourage, and a time to correct. The list could be nearly limitless.

Now some may argue that there’s never a good time to kill, hate, go to war, or die, but in certain contexts even those things can bee seen as ‘good’. Killing an animal that’s attacking someone, hating sin, fighting a war against bigotry and injustice, or dying as a release from chronic suffering may all be considered good things in the right context.

This chapter reminds me that context is key – God allows us (and commands us) to do many things within certain times and in certain places. Not every allowance/command is for every time and place – context matters greatly.

How do we discern the proper time and place for something? The best way I know is by listening to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. He can tell us when/what to speak, and when to remain silent; when/how to intervene, and when to refrain. You get the idea. The Spirit’s primary role in our lives is an intermediary and guide to help us know God’s will. I encourage us all to trust in Him as we seek to do God’s will in the right place, at the right time, in the right way.

Father God, our Wise and Sovereign Lord, glorifying You is our life’s purpose. Spirit we invite Your guidance hour by hour, day by day as we seek to do the Father’s will. We can struggle to hear Your voice at times, so please help us to calm and clear our minds so we can discern Your leading. We wish to honor and glorify our Father in heaven, forever and ever, from this day forward, amen.
