This chapter begins with instructions for what Titus is to teach the church attendees / disciples.
“But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.” (v1-6)
Paul continues to give instruction regarding conduct, especially regarding their self-control. It would seem that the people Titus served had problems controlling their behavior, perhaps to the point of being disruptive or destructive to the church body.
Why did Paul focus on behavior of elders, other church authorities, and now the attendees? Possibly because behavior is an outwardly observable result of a person’s values, perspectives, and perceptions. If someone consistently behaves in a way that is contrary to scripture / doctrine, there’s a decent chance their innermost being (heart and/or mind) needs some correction.
I think that’s why Paul explicitly opens this section with “teach what accords with sound doctrine” – it’s entirely possible the people had some core doctrines or beliefs that were twisted, corrupt or misunderstood, which led to undisciplined behaviors.
This is one of the reasons I will encourage us over and over again to spend daily time with God (in both scripture and prayer). The more time and consistency we have in our relationship with God, the more likely we are to retain sound doctrine, and have correct perspectives / perceptions / values leading to Christlike behaviors. It’s not a guarantee we’ll be flawless, but it does increase the likelihood of successfully mirroring Jesus. Think of it like practicing a song – a flawless performance may not be guaranteed, but you will perform far better than if you did not practice at all.
Father God, our Creator and Sovereign King, You are wonderous beyond description. Your love for us is unmatched, and You generously provide Your abundant presence in our lives if we invite You in. May Your Spirit overflow our hearts with love for You and others, giving us moment-by-moment guidance, so we may successfully obey Your commands. May we honor You with our hearts and actions, behaving in alignment with Your will and Your word, for Your honor and glory, and for all to see. We praise You in the name of Jesus, the one whose heart and behavior were flawless. Amen.
