This chapter describes a wicked conspiracy by Jezebel (Ahab’s wife) to murder a man (Naboth) for his vineyard, because Ahab wanted it for a vegetable garden. Ahab is later condemned by God through Elijah for his own sin, and for Jezebel’s as well (probably because Ahab allowed Jezebel’s wickedness).
“[Elijah] answered, ‘…you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the Lord. Behold, I will bring disaster upon you. I will utterly burn you up, and will cut off from Ahab every male, bond or free, in Israel… for the anger to which you have provoked me, and because you have made Israel to sin. And of Jezebel the Lord also said, “The dogs shall eat Jezebel within the walls of Jezreel.” Anyone belonging to Ahab who dies in the city the dogs shall eat, and anyone of his who dies in the open country the birds of the heavens shall eat.’ ” (v20-24 abr)
The evil plot by Jezebel to murder Naboth for his vineyard is reminiscent of David’s plot to murder Uriah to take Bathsheba as his wife. Both plots involved multiple conspirators and the execution of someone who had done nothing wrong, all because of greed and covetousness (desiring that which one does not have).
Just as the prophet Nathan’s words caused David to repent, Elijah’s words cause Ahab to humble himself and repent before the Lord. God honors Ahab’s repentance and tells Elijah He will not destroy Ahab’s family until his son’s generation.
Are there any wise voices in your life that cause you to take stock? Perhaps the Holy Spirit, a mentor, or other trusted person has spoken into your circumstances and given light to something. I’ve had this happen several times. If we’re not currently hearing one of these voices, then I suggest we seek them out (or stop ignoring them, as I’ve done sometimes). I encourage us to heed such wisdom and make any adjustments to our lives that would align us more closely with God’s heart for us.
Father God, our Wise Counselor, and Everlasting Lord, we praise Your holy name. You have blessed us with many wise voices in our lives, and I ask that You would please help us to heed them. Father we confess we don’t always listen when You speak, and ask for forgiveness. Please open our eyes, ears, minds and hearts to Your word, and keep us on the paths of righteousness, for Your name’s sake. In the name of Jesus, who spoke volumes of wisdom for our guidance, amen.
