This chapter parallels 1 Ki 10, detailing a visit from the queen of Sheba and the extent of Solomon’s wealth.
“Thus King Solomon excelled all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom. And all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put into his mind. Every one of them brought his present, articles of silver and of gold, garments, myrrh, spices, horses, and mules, so much year by year. And he ruled over all the kings from the Euphrates to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt.” (v22-24,26)
I find it fascinating that Solomon ruled over all of the kings in the surrounding areas. How was this possible? He counseled them using the wisdom God had given him. In return they gave Solomon many gifts and much respect, and some of them (eg. the queen of Sheba) even gave glory to God.
Let’s spend a moment talking about spiritual gifts, and how to use them. By definition, these are supernaturally enhanced abilities that when used in obedience to God, will bring Glory to Him and bless those around us. It’s important to note that spiritual gifts are primarily for the benefit of others, not the person to whom the gift is entrusted.
Solomon uses his deep wisdom for the benefit of those around him, though I think the wealth he received in return may have gone to his head a little… but I digress.
I encourage each of us to assess the gifts and abilities God has given us. The gift(s) we received will do many things: edify / uplift others, bring us joy, glorify God, help build God’s kingdom, spread the Lord’s blessing to those who need to it, etc. There are too many spiritual gifts to exhaustively list them, thought some common ones include teaching, service, hospitality, prayer, healing, generosity, and multiple artforms.
As we’re assessing our gift(s), let’s do two main things – give glory and praise to God for that which He has given us, and ask Him how He’d like us to use our gift(s) today. Virtually every gift can still be utilized today in some fashion, even during a lockdown, though some creativity may be required. For example, if your gifts include hospitality, you could organize a video conference for people where they would feel welcomed and cared for (this could also create an opportunity for others to utilize their gifts such as teaching or prayer). Let’s be the creative people God created us to be, and remain obedient to His leading, especially in these difficult times.
Father God, our Magnificent Lord and King, holy, holy, holy is Your name. You have blessed us so richly with these gifts and abilities. Please guide us to glorify You, and build Your kingdom one soul at a time. May we never cease to bless others with that we have received from You. Jesus, please guide us and help us to exhibit Your love for this world in a time when they need it the most. In Your precious and Redeeming name way pray, amen.
