Bildad speaks again, and emphasizes how the wicked will be punished (he’s probably implying that Job’s circumstances are punishment due to wickedness).
” ‘Indeed, the light of the wicked is put out, and the flame of his fire does not shine. The light is dark in his tent, and his lamp above him is put out. His strong steps are shortened, and his own schemes throw him down. His roots dry up beneath, and his branches wither above. He is thrust from light into darkness, and driven out of the world. Surely such are the dwellings of the unrighteous, such is the place of him who knows not God.’ ” (v5-7,16,18,21)
Bildad correctly believes that God is just and righteous and He will not allow evil to prevail. The problem is, we find many examples in the Bible, and in current times, where evil seems to flourish uninhibited – why is that?
Jeremiah asked the same question: “Righteous are you, O Lord… yet I would plead my case before you. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all who are treacherous thrive? You plant them, and they take root; they grow and produce fruit… How long will the land mourn and the grass of every field wither? For the evil of those who dwell in it the beasts and the birds are swept away…” (Jer 12:1-2,4 abr)
Both Bildad and Jeremiah are correct – God will ultimately not tolerate wickedness, yet He seemingly allows it for a time.
We know from scripture that God has allowed Satan, the “prince of the power of the air” (Eph 2:2) to temporarily rule in this world, and have influence over people who choose unrighteousness (the “sons of disobedience” [Eph 2:2]).
My encouragement for today is no matter how much evil or suffering from evil is currently in this world, it is temporary, and God has already declared victory over it. “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.” (Rom 16:20) “Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out.” (Jn 12:31)
Satan’s rule and the presence of evil have an expiration date – we’re not sure what that date is, but we have the God’s promises that this period of suffering will end. Our challenge for today is to remain obedient to God, and be an example to all those who are disobedient, so they may come to repentance before it’s too late.
Father God, our Great and Mighty King, holy and awesome is Your name. Thank you for ruling over us with grace and mercy, extending forgiveness to all who accept it. Thank you for vanquishing the power of evil, putting it to death on the cross, and opening the door to You. Father may all who are disobedient come to know You through the love and joy of those who already obey You. May we all be shining examples of all that is good and holy in this world. To You be all honor, glory and praise, forever and ever, amen.
