“Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the lyre! He covers the heavens with clouds; he prepares rain for the earth; he makes grass grow on the hills. He gives to the beasts their food, and to the young ravens that cry. His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man, but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.” (v7-11)
These five verses are a powerful reminder:
– God is creator and sustains
– God provides for needs
– God delights in the hearts of those who fear, revere and trust Him
– We are to praise Him and be thankful
These verses reinforce the truth that God loves His creation, and of course His creation includes us. We are His beloved children, and when we hope in His steadfast love, He delights in us.
My challenge for today is to delight in God, similar to how He delights in us. Let’s sit in wonder at who He is, and what He does for us (eg. material and immaterial sustenance). Let’s revel in God’s love and glory, celebrating our creator God.
Father God, Holy One of Israel, we praise Your awesome name. The heavens and earth listen to Your voice, and we long to do the same. Please help us to remember who You are, and who we are in comparison. May we learn to simply rest in Your presence, revering and fearing You, reveling in Your lavish love. Please teach us to celebrate and praise You every moment of every day. Jesus, please show us how to do this. Amen.
P.S. – The author of this psalm may have heard of Manitoba: “He gives snow like wool; he scatters frost like ashes. He hurls down his crystals of ice like crumbs; who can stand before his cold?” (v16-17) Just an amusing thought. 🙂
