“When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, ‘The Lord has done great things for them.’ The Lord has done great things for us; we are glad. Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the Negeb! Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.” (v1-6)
This psalm really hits home the generosity and abundance of blessing that God pours out upon us. When His children listen to His voice and obey, there is blessing, which includes provision for basic needs and joy in our hearts.
This is not a prosperity gospel – God does not promise to give us ideal life circumstances or earthly wealth. What He does promise is to meet our basic needs (2 Cor 9:8, 2 Pet 1:2) and keep our souls from eternal destruction (Isa 41:10, 2 Cor 4:8-9).
Today I am reminded to abide and remain in God’s presence, to “take refuge” in Him. The more time I spend with Him, the stronger my faith and joy will become. “But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you.” (Psa 5:11)
I’m not suggesting we spend 8 hours each day reading our Bible, though praying multiple times throughout the day would be ideal. Let’s try training ourselves with little reminders to pray – perhaps setting an alarm at intervals throughout the day, or maybe “every time _____ happens, I will pray” (fill in the blank with things that occur frequently in your life, perhaps every time the “phone rings” or “text notification chimes” or each time you top up your coffee cup).
If we build prayer reminders into our daily lives, talking to God will become a natural occurrence for us and eventually the joy and blessings will become apparent (often they already exist, we just don’t always notice them).
Father we praise You, for You are worthy of our praise. God of abundant blessing and our source of joy, we humbly submit ourselves to sitting at Your feet. Please teach us, guide us, and let us simply revel in Your presence. Thank you for gently reminding us of Your presence throughout the day. We look forward to our times with You. Amen.
