“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.” (v1-8)
This famous psalm of praise and testament to God’s character is used as inspiration for a number of songs, including this one: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dwdi3pnQ4aQ
The author speaks of God as Helper, Creator, Protector, Overseer, Keeper, and Preserver. We are also reminded that God is infinite: He never tires, and He never stops, for all of eternity.
My thought for today is to live as if this is true: God will protect us from evil if we remain rooted in Him. How many times have I believed the lie that sometimes I don’t have a choice, sin is a necessary evil? The author here doesn’t believe that – he is confident that God will deliver us from all evil and temptation. So, I ask each of us, where does our help come from? Does it come from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth?
Father, Creator, Protector, we come before You today humbled by Your awesome presence. You are so great Father, and we are so weak. Please Father deliver us from temptation and the hand of the evil one. Please guard our going out and coming in, and the very thoughts of our minds, so that we would keep our feet from evil and believe fewer lies. Please keep us on the path of righteousness for Your name’s sake, and speak testimony of You to those around us by the example we live out. In the powerful name of Jesus the deliverer we ask this, amen.
